Thursday, July 18, 2024 — A Pinckney couple has provided five $2,500 scholarships to local high school seniors in support of their continued studies in music and other subjects at college.

For the ninth year in a row, the Remedios Montalbo and A. Michael Young Scholarships were offered in collaboration with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra (A2SO), recognizing and supporting highly motivated college-bound seniors at Pinckney and Ypsilanti Community High Schools. The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra is committed to playing an active role in the Southeast Michigan region through its Learning & Community initiatives. A2SO musicians have paired with Pinckney HS students on stage for Side by Side concerts in recent years, and the orchestra regularly hosts farmers market performances, instrument petting zoos at local schools and community fairs, in-classroom performances, and annual youth concerts attracting thousands of students from Washtenaw County and beyond.

For A2SO Executive Director Sarah Calderini, “the Remedios Montalbo and A. Michael Young Scholarships provide a shining example of what’s possible when generous individuals throughout the community come together to support the bright minds of tomorrow. We continue to be grateful for the couple’s commitment and investment, and wish the scholarship recipients well as they embark on their studies at university and beyond.”

For the Youngs, “(we’re) delighted to continue offering scholarships to deserving seniors whose dedication and achievements never fail to surprise us.”

The son of a German immigrant, A. Michael Young was raised in Detroit and met Remedios Montalbo after she had moved to the United States from the Phillipines to pursue a postgraduate degree. After working as research scientists at Parke-Davis, Warner-Lambert, and Pfizer for over 30 years, the couple continues to be actively engaged in Washtenaw and Livingston counties, advocating for education and volunteerism. Remedios currently serves on the Board of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra.
